Wordle: The viral word game that celebrities love

If you're looking for a fun and addictive way to test your vocabulary skills, you might want to try Wordle. Wordle is a simple online game that challenges players to guess a five-letter word in six tries or less. After each guess, the letters change color to indicate whether they are correct, incorrect or in the wrong position. The goal is to turn all the letters green and reveal the word.
Wordle was created by Josh Wardle, a British software engineer who lives in New York. He launched the game in October 2022 as a personal project and a gift for his partner, who loves word games. He did not expect it to become a viral sensation, but it did.
According to Wardle, Wordle has attracted more than 10 million daily players as of July 1, 2023. The game has also gained popularity among celebrities, who often share their results on social media. Some of the famous fans of Wordle include:
- Stephen Fry, the British actor, comedian and writer, who called Wordle "a daily delight" and praised its "elegance and simplicity".
- Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and star of Hamilton and In the Heights, who tweeted "Wordle is my new obsession" and shared his streak of 10 consecutive wins.
- Ryan Reynolds, the star of Deadpool and Free Guy, who joked "Wordle is ruining my life" and posted a screenshot of his failed attempt at guessing the word "jazzy".
Wordle has also inspired memes, fan art, merchandise and spin-offs. Some people have created their own versions of Wordle with different themes, languages or rules. Others have used Wordle as a way to propose, announce pregnancies or send messages.
Wardle said he is happy that his game has brought joy to so many people and that he plans to keep it free and ad-free. He also said he has no intention of adding more features or changing the game's design. He said he likes Wordle's simplicity and hopes it will remain "a little oasis of calm on the internet".
