How Technology Can Save the World: A Chat with Elon Musk
Hiroshi Sato
Elon Musk is one of the most influential and visionary entrepreneurs of our time. He is the founder and CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company, among other ventures. He is also a philanthropist who has donated millions of dollars to various causes, such as education, clean energy, and human rights.
I had the opportunity to interview him via Zoom and ask him about his goals, challenges, and inspirations. Here are some highlights from our conversation.
Hiroshi Sato: Thank you for taking the time to talk to me, Mr. Musk. You have been very busy lately with launching rockets, building tunnels, and developing brain-computer interfaces. What drives you to pursue such ambitious projects?
Elon Musk: Well, I think the most important thing is to have a positive impact on the world and humanity. I believe that we are facing some existential threats, such as climate change, artificial intelligence, and nuclear war. We need to find solutions to these problems before it's too late. That's why I'm working on making electric vehicles, reusable rockets, neural implants, and underground transportation systems.
Hiroshi Sato: That's very admirable and inspiring. How do you balance your time and energy between your different companies and initiatives?
Elon Musk: It's not easy, I can tell you that. I try to focus on the most urgent and important things first, and delegate the rest to my teams. I also try to learn as much as I can from different fields and disciplines, because I think that's how innovation happens. Sometimes I have to make trade-offs and sacrifices, but I always keep in mind the bigger picture and the long-term vision.
Hiroshi Sato: Speaking of vision, what is your ultimate goal for humanity? What kind of future do you envision for us?
Elon Musk: My ultimate goal is to make humanity a multi-planetary species. I think that's the best way to ensure our survival and prosperity in the long run. I also think that's the most exciting and meaningful thing we can do as a civilization. Imagine living on Mars or other planets, exploring the solar system and beyond, discovering new wonders and mysteries. That would be amazing.
Hiroshi Sato: It certainly would be. How realistic do you think that goal is? When do you think we will be able to colonize Mars?
Elon Musk: I think it's very realistic, if we work hard and smart enough. We already have the technology and the resources to do it. We just need the will and the courage to make it happen. I hope we can send the first humans to Mars in this decade, maybe by 2026 or 2028. And then gradually build up a self-sustaining city on Mars over time.
Hiroshi Sato: That sounds incredible. What are some of the biggest challenges or risks that you foresee in achieving that goal?
Elon Musk: Well, there are many technical challenges, such as landing safely on Mars, producing oxygen and water, growing food, dealing with radiation and dust storms, etc. There are also financial challenges, such as raising enough funds and attracting enough customers and investors. And there are also social and political challenges, such as getting public support and international cooperation.
Hiroshi Sato: How do you cope with these challenges? How do you overcome them?
Elon Musk: I try to be optimistic and resilient. I don't give up easily. I learn from my failures and mistakes. I listen to feedback and criticism. I adapt and improve constantly. I also surround myself with talented and passionate people who share my vision and values.
Hiroshi Sato: That's very impressive and admirable. What advice would you give to young people who want to follow your footsteps and make a difference in the world?
Elon Musk: I would say, don't be afraid to dream big and pursue your passions. Don't let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do. Don't be constrained by the status quo or the norms of society. Be curious and creative. Be bold and brave. Be persistent and determined. And most importantly, have fun and enjoy the journey.
Hiroshi Sato: Thank you very much for your time and wisdom, Mr. Musk. It was a pleasure and an honor to talk to you.
Elon Musk: Thank you, Hiroshi. It was a pleasure and an honor to talk to you too.
