The NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers took an unexpected turn on Monday night when mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor made a surprise appearance at the American Airlines Arena.

McGregor, who is scheduled to fight Dustin Poirier in a trilogy bout on July 10, was invited to the court during a timeout in the third quarter to promote his upcoming fight and his whiskey brand, Proper No. Twelve.

However, things went south when McGregor decided to take a swing at the Heat mascot, Burnie, who was standing next to him. The Irish fighter delivered a powerful punch to the mascot's head, knocking him out cold and sending him tumbling to the floor.

The crowd erupted in boos and gasps as security rushed to separate McGregor from Burnie, who was carried away on a stretcher. The players and coaches on both teams looked on in shock and disbelief as the incident unfolded.

McGregor was escorted out of the arena by security and police, while Burnie was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The game resumed after a brief delay, with the Lakers winning 112-108 to take a 3-1 lead in the series.

The NBA and the Miami Heat issued a joint statement after the game, condemning McGregor's actions and apologizing to the fans and the mascot.

"We are deeply disturbed and appalled by the senseless and unprovoked attack on our beloved mascot, Burnie, by Conor McGregor. This was a disgraceful and unacceptable act of violence that has no place in our league or our society. We are cooperating with the authorities to hold McGregor accountable for his actions. We also extend our sincere apologies and best wishes to Burnie, who is recovering at the hospital. He is a valued member of our Heat family and we hope to see him back on his feet soon."

McGregor's camp has not issued any statement or explanation for his behavior, but sources close to him say he was intoxicated and mistook Burnie for Poirier. McGregor has a history of controversial and violent incidents outside the octagon, including throwing a dolly at a bus full of UFC fighters in 2018, punching an elderly man in a pub in 2019, and breaking Poirier's leg in their second fight in January.

Many fans and analysts have criticized McGregor for his lack of professionalism and respect for his opponents and the sport of MMA. Some have also questioned his mental state and his ability to compete at the highest level.

McGregor faces potential legal action from the NBA, the Miami Heat, and Burnie, as well as possible sanctions from the UFC and the Nevada State Athletic Commission. His fight with Poirier is also in jeopardy, as he could be suspended or banned from entering the US.

The incident has overshadowed what was supposed to be an exciting and competitive series between two of the best teams in the NBA. The Lakers are one win away from their 18th championship, while the Heat are trying to repeat their miraculous run from last year's bubble.

The NBA Finals will resume on Wednesday night with Game 5 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
